Albertsons Monopoly 2014

(Note: this article is about the 2014 contest. Read all about the 2015 contest here).

Let the game piece collecting, organizing and trading begin – a promotion familiar to millions of supermarket shoppers in parts of the Western and Southwestern U.S. is now taking a huge swath of the country by storm. The Monopoly Collect and Win game, an annual event in Albertsons Market stores since 2009, has now expanded to the entire family of Albertsons-owned stores. And, as a result, the potential prizes are bigger than ever.

Unfortunately, so are the chances of winning.

As experienced players well know, or those who’ve participated in similar Monopoly games at places like McDonald’s, shoppers earn game pieces every time they make a purchase at a participating store. There are also “bonus items” in stores that offer extra game pieces with a purchase. The goal is collect all of the pieces needed to win a prize, of up to $1 million.

Last year’s Monopoly game was already well under way, when the owners of Albertsons Market acquired Jewel-Osco, ACME, Shaw’s, Star Market and the rest of the Albertsons chain. So this year is the first time those stores are included in the contest. With many more stores and shoppers participating, the pool of potential prizes has nearly tripled, from $20 million to $55 million. And while previous contests have offered a single $1 million top prize, this year there are three million-dollar prizes up for grabs, as well as a $500,000 second prize and many more smaller prizes available than before.

That’s the good news. Not to dampen the excitement, but the chances of winning anything at all have gone up along with the total prize money.

ppod_672x560

Last year, no one won a million dollars. No one won either of the $100,000 or $50,000 runner-up prizes available either. The biggest winner got $40,000. Lots of people won smaller prizes, but even that has become more difficult this year.

On the low end of the prize scale, the chances of getting an instant-win piece good for a free grocery item have gone up from 1 in 114 last year, to 1 in 199 this year. And what about that million dollar top prize? Last year, the chances of getting the one “rare piece” needed to win (which still had to be combined with a “semi-rare” piece), were 81.5 million to one. This year, even though there are three top prizes available, you have a 1 in 133 million chance of getting just one of them – and an additional 1 in 5,000 chance of getting the other “semi-rare” piece.

That means, with one try, the odds of getting both pieces, and winning a million bucks, are more than 333 billion-to-one. To put that into a little perspective, your chances of winning the multi-million dollar Powerball lottery jackpot are 1 in 175 million. That means you’re more likely to win the Powerball jackpot – not once, but nearly TWO THOUSAND TIMES. You’re also about three times more likely to be struck by lightning, while simultaneously being eaten by a shark. Seriously.

Of course, with hundreds of millions of game pieces out there, no one is expected to win a million dollars with just two game pieces on their very first try. The more you play, the better your odds – though even with dozens, or hundreds, of game pieces, you’re still more likely to win Powerball. Or to get hit by lightning. Or by an asteroid, for that matter.

But astronomical odds have never stopped people from trying. And if you feel like throwing up your hands in frustration, consider this – two years ago, someone actually managed to win a million bucks from Albertsons. 20-year-old Melissa Varela of El Paso, Texas became the game’s one and only grand prize winner so far, when she earned the top Monopoly prize in May 2012.

As an added bonus this year, if the top six prizes (three million dollar prizes and three $500,000 prizes) are not won, there will be a “second chance drawing” for a single $500,000 prize among all players who register on their store’s website. Someone is guaranteed a pretty nice sum then.

So it can happen. And if you spend all your money at Albertsons, Jewel-Osco, ACME, Shaw’s or Star Market instead of on lottery tickets – and stay out of the ocean during lightning storms – it just might happen to you, too.

  1. I just got a rare piece for the $25 gift card! Woohhooo :). I got the other pieces I needed from monopolytickets.tictail.com.

  2. I created a free website to help keep track of your game pieces at http://www.jewelmonopoly.com. Once you have most of the pieces, you probably dread having to check the pieces against the playing board because the spots for the pieces aren’t always easy to find. It can be frustrating coming home with the groceries knowing that you have 80 pieces to check when 99% of them will be duplicates that you already have.

The Jewel Monopoly Game Piece Checker will let you quickly punch in the 3 digit piece numbers telling you if it’s a duplicate or one that you need.

  3. I am looking for S823

    • Well, I know that I’m late to the game, but I have just opened the last of my Albertson’s Monopoly game pieces and I have S825 (Capri Sun), the semi-rare piece for the $40,000 Motorcycle or Boat. If anybody out there has the rare piece (S823) and wants to buy mine before the Tuesday, 6/10/14, deadline, you can email me at: caprisunsd@hotmail.com. I can meet you in person in San Diego, California, or I can Express Mail the game piece to you. (In order to get the package to you by noon on Tuesday, I will have to mail it before 3 pm on Monday.) Price: make your best offer.

  40. Hi Team,

Let’s stop being so greedy about selling the stamps. If you guys google Albertsons monopoly winner 2013 all of you will find that last year many people didn’t win at all not even the million only the small prizes…. I am willing to share the motorcycle money as I need one more stamp. I ride motorcycles so I am planning on buying a new one. https://www.albertsons.com/tag/monopoly-collect-win-game/

    • lol, you tell people not to be greedy and you want someone to trade you a rare piece so you can get your motorcycle?

You have a worthless semi rare piece and you look for a sucker to give you an actual winning piece and “split” or “share”?

There are to parts of your “Team”: “the sucker” and “the wise guy”… with you being a wise guy.

If someone wants to get a hundred bucks for his piece does not make him/her greedy… you are the greedy one.

      • I already own a motorcycle. I will not cry if I don’t win. It is just a game. Most likely you are one of the greedy ones selling the stamps. You have no huevos to show your real name Best of Lucks!

        • LOL, this is a good one Johanna, or whatever your name is… clearly there is only one Johanna out there so thanks for clearly identifying yourself… LMAO

Yes, I did sell some semi rare pieces and I asked $50 for it, while you have a semi rare piece and when you ask someone to trade you a winning rare piece, essentially asking them to give you $40,000…

… you are either not very bright
… or you are trying to con someone into giving you $40,000

I wish Best of Luck… to all honest people.

    • Hi Rachel,
Just getting into this. You apparently have one of the rare… NOT semi-rare pieces. You should consider keeping it yourself and keep attempting to locate X805 yourself. The odds are stacked against you, but ask yourself “what if”? If it were semi-rare I would advise you to take the money and run, but it looks like you have a tough, tough piece to get. If I were in your shoes I would offer a 50/50 split to anyone that gets X805 or maybe even 75/25 (75% for them and 25% for you) Good luck and God bless!!! bob

  93. I found a video with recent winners for 2014 Albertsons Monopol. I was not allowed to post the link, sorry. If you want to see it go to website called surveyjet and than go to “Giveaways” and then follow the link to the page dedicated to Albertsons Monopoly.

    Best of Luck Everyone!

  94. I found a video with recent winners for 2014. I am not sure if I can post a link in here. I will try. If I won’t be allowed to do so just go to website called surveyjet, go to “Giveaways” and then follow the link.

  95. Has anyone on here actually traded and been successful? I went searching for reviews to see if there were actual winners and found this site. I see you all saying what you have, what you want, and the please please email me, call me messages, but looks like we’re all in different states, so I’m just wondering how that has been working for anyone? No one ever comments after they say what they have. Also is it just me, or does the odds really matter at this point? If you want to be mathematical about a “game” that’s fabulous but this is just a game. No one goes into the casino talking about their odds they just play, actually most expect to loose at least a minimum. At least unlike playing the lotto or going to the casino, your not spending any extra $. Your actually grocery shopping for things you need and in return your getting an added bonus of playing a game with “Potential” winnings. No disrespect to anyone on here (we all want to win) but it’s funny to me how people make things more than they should be. And for those asking for a finders fee for a game piece (shame on you) how does the person know they will actually get the piece, I can understand a fair trade (even then who’s going to mail it first and how is that guaranteed)? but a fee for something that was given to you for free is a little risky. You have until May to play so just keep the faith that you will win something and enjoy playing the game in the mean time…. Best Wishes to ALL!

    • It’s free if someone gives it to you FREE, with no strings attached. Its not free if you have to make a purchase to get it.

Why someone should be ashamed for asking small finders fee? Should he/she just give it away?… or what? I don’t get it.

You talk about keeping the fait, but looks like you have none. Not all people are crooks and there are ways of making sure you won’t get cheated.

Just use PayPal, if you won’t get your piece make a dispute and cheater will never see his (your) money.

    cesarbak99@yahoo.com

  116. Your statistical math is way off, and not even really applicable to a game like this. I would highly recommend taking down your “666-billion to 1” odds as it’s completely inaccurate and makes this game seem “rigged” which it’s not.

You only multiple probabilities if it’s a sequence of independent events. There are 400M (million) game tokens total. So at a very minimum, each time you rip a ticket open, you’re worst odds are 400M:1 that you’re going to get a rare, semi-rare, or any other ticket. Since there are multiple of each time, the odds are way better than 400M:1 is all cases. See below:

In this example of rare and semi-rare tickets, the odds are additive, not multiplicative. The odds of getting $1M dollars is 400M/3 – 400 million tickets total, and three winning rare tickets – so 133M:1. The odds of getting a semi-rare ticket are 1:5,000 so doing some basic math, this means there are 80K semi-rare tickets.

So using basic additive properties of statistics since each draw is coming from the same pool of tickets, the odds of winning $1M is 133,000,000+5,000, so 133,005,000:1. The odds go down considerable with each additional draw as well. So if you pull 10 tickets/visit then it’s 13M:1 for the rare and 500:1 for the semi-rare. 100 tickets, it’s 1.3M:1 for the rare, and 50:1 for the semi-rare.

By all means have someone with a higher level of education than me double-check this, but this was statistics 101 from my freshman year in college. Same basic concepts listed here online.

    https://www.khanacademy.org/math/probability/independent-dependent-probability

    • I have gone over and double checked everything – and I welcome any input from anyone who’s more mathematically inclined than I am! – and I think there are flaws with both of our calculations. By adding, instead of multiplying, the odds as you do, you’re finding the odds of picking EITHER a rare piece or a semi-rare piece in your first draw. So you have 133,005,000:1 odds of finding one of the two pieces needed to win a million dollars. But then you still need to find the other piece, which dramatically increases those odds.

So you need to multiply the odds of finding a rare piece, and the odds of finding a semi-rare piece. 3/400M * 80,000/399,999,999 (one less than 400M since you’ve already picked one in your first draw) = approximately 1/666 billion.

But… my mistake was that those are the odds of finding a rare piece, then a semi-rare piece, in that exact order. You can still win by finding a semi-rare piece first, then a rare piece, which effectively doubles your chances. So your odds of finding either combination of the two in one draw are actually 333 billion to one.

Of course those odds improve the more game pieces you have. So they’re not as bad as 1 in 666 billion – but not nearly as good as 1 in 133,005,000. That doesn’t mean the game is “rigged”, it just means it’s very difficult to win the top prize. But then that’s why there are smaller prizes, to keep it interesting.

      • With all do respect, I think we can simply forget about semi rare pieces in this equation. Why?

The rare pieces are important and only the rare pieces. They are truly in demand. If there is only 3 rare pieces available for main prize of $1M then whoever gets it will be the real winner here, not the (lets say) 100 people that will acquire semi rare pieces.

It is my wild guess that there are 100 semi rare pieces, but so far I encountered 3 participants that claimed to have 5 such tickets (X803).

If rare piece are the key to $1000 000 and there is 100 semi rare tickets available then the value of such semi rare ticket is at the most 3/100, with is at the most $33,333. If that’s the case, I am sure there will be someone willing to part ways with semi rare piece for less than that.

In no case semi rare piece is worth 50% of the prize.

Our true 1 ticket odds are 1/400M. 100 tickets makes it 1/4M. These are OK odds, not great, but OK. Lets put getting hit by a lightning while being eaten by a shark to rest.

Best of luck finding the real winners!

        • Well, that’s the thing about this contest, as compared to, say, McDonald’s Monopoly. In that game, you have a 1:600 million chance of getting the rare piece, and a 1:11 chance of getting the semi-rare piece. That means there are some 60 million semi-rare pieces out there, so finding the rare piece is indeed practically a guaranteed win.

But in the Albertsons game, even if you manage to find the rare piece, the chance of finding a semi-rare piece is nowhere near a certainty. With 1:5,000 odds, as Jeff pointed out, that means there are 80,000 semi-rare pieces out of 400 million pieces. Even if you collected 100 or so game pieces over the course of the game, you’d still be at a disadvantage to those 1:5,000 odds.

Of course, a savvy player who gets the rare piece should be able to link up with someone who has a semi-rare piece – but that’s assuming a savvy player finds it. How awful would it be if a casual player finds the rare piece, doesn’t realize it, never gets a semi-rare piece and just throws it away after the game ends??

          • That’s the thing, you don’t really have to “find” the semi rare piece (I’m using $1M example here). You can just buy it. There are many of them available already and the game has still a long way to go.

There is always a chance someone throws the rare piece away. No doubt. Also we are assuming that all the winning pieces are in play and were released by Albertsons. They do hold a number of tickets for people that will send SASE and request a free ticket. Anyone can get one free ticket plus one bonus ticket, so 2 tickets all together.

  117. I have a lot of repeat ones.If anyone like to trade please email me at erickfurtado@hotmail.com

  118. To be honest you have a better chance of getting struck by lightening then winning the million dollar prize. The last documented winner that I remember seeing was in 2012. Not to mention the amount of revenue Albertsons gets because so many people will buy more food in hopes of winning.

  119. There is a significant flaw in your calculations. The odds you posted are for winning with only piece. Which you obviously can’t. And everyone will have multiple pieces. If you get only 100 pieces, you need to divide the odds by 100. So 5000 to 1 becomes 50/1, 133 million becomes 1.33 million, and the product of the two is now 66.6 million to one. Still not, good, but hardly 666 billion to one.

    • [sigh] 100 pieces has a 100/1.33MM chance, not 1.33MM/100. I bet you pay 29.99% on your credit cards.

      • Your comment is arrogant and pointless. I am not sure if it’s more arrogant or more pointless.

At least SLyleK has a point… and aside technicalities is absolutely right. Try to get out of your box sometimes.

    • The odds listed are indeed your odds of winning on your first try – with two game pieces (not one, since that would be impossible). It goes without saying that your odds get better the more you play, just as your odds of winning the lottery get better the more tickets you buy.

So yes, as you point out, your odds improve significantly the more you play. They’re still not great, but they get much better than 333 billion to one!

  120. Let’s trade pieces. Contact at noisouth@yahoo.com

  121. That policy sounds like it would violate state laws about lotteries.

  122. McDonalds does Monopoly right. I win almost every time I play. Usually fries or a sandwich.

  123. Pingback: Reader deals 2/12/14 - Mashup Mom

  124. No they will have a second chance drawing for $500,000.00

see here in their official rules

    5. SECOND CHANCE DRAWING: If none of the top six (6) prizes [three (3) $1,000,000 Cash (30-year annuity) prizes or three (3) $500,000 Dream Home prizes] as described in Rule #3, are claimed by June 10, 2014, ONLY THEN will a random second chance drawing from all valid sweepstakes entries (as described in Rule #4) occur on or about June 20, 2014 for one (1) $500,000 Cash Prize. Potential winner if applicable will be contacted based on the information provided, if this information is not complete or the person does not respond within fourteen (14) days after email sent to email address provided or by certified mail for mail-in entries, the prize will be forfeited and an alternate winner will be drawn. Odds of winning drawing if applicable depends on the number of registrations received. Prize cannot be transferred or substituted, except at the sponsor’s discretion.

  125. So what happens to the money that no one wins? I always thought organizations/businesses had an obligation to pay out that money and usually held a after contest drawing of some sort to distribute it, if no one “won” it.
