A&P storefront

(Update: Click here for the latest, up-to-date list of the status of all A&P-owned stores.)

If you shop at A&P or any of its other company-owned stores iin the Northeast, prepare for some changes. The company’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition, filed late Sunday night, means your neighborhood store is likely to have a new name and a new owner – if it stays open at all.

In bankruptcy papers filed in court, A&P separated all of its 296 A&P, Food Basics, Food Emporium, Pathmark, Super Fresh, Waldbaum’s and Best Cellars locations into three “tiers”. Tier I consists of the 120 “most profitable and marketable ‘core’ stores” that will be divvied up among ACME, Stop & Shop and Key Food. Tier II consists of 151 “non-core” stores, which A&P plans to make available for sale to other interested parties. And Tier III consists of the duds – 25 stores that “have negative profitability and negative lease value.”

Those stores won’t be sold – they’ll just be closed.

“The vast majority of our stores are operating normally and will be fully stocked,” A&P assured customers. “We will honor all existing customer promotional and loyalty programs at stores that will remain open during the sale process.”

But customers at the stores marked for closure got a slightly different message. “In the coming weeks, we will be running significant mark-downs on many of our products,” that message read. “We encourage you to continue to visit this store, up until we close our doors.” The closings are expected to take place “within the next few months.”

Below is a list of the 25 stores marked for closure, followed by lists of the 76 stores that ACME plans to buy, the 25 to be acquired by Stop & Shop, and the 19 that Key Food plans to purchase (update: Key Food later reduced its planned purchases to 17, ACME to 70 and Stop & Shop to 24). If your local store isn’t on any of the lists, that means it’s a “Tier II” store, and anything’s possible – A&P hopes to sell it, but there’s no guarantee that a buyer will be found.

In a couple of side notes, nearly half of the stores that Stop & Shop is expected to buy are in New York City. Currently, the chain has only five locations in the city, so the A&P purchases will nearly triple Stop & Shop’s presence in the Big Apple. And in the case of Albertsons-owned ACME, the Pennsylvania-based chain would end up acquiring its first stores in New York and Connecticut, expanding its footprint deeper into the Northeast than ever before. So if New Yorkers don’t yet know about the store that their neighbors to the south fondly refer to as “the Ack-a-me” – they will soon.

  2. All A & P Canada stores have been sold and rebranded in Canada as Metro Supermarkets.
Metro Canada is a much better store operator than A & P Canada was.
Prices are still very high although the produce quality is much better.

  3. back in 1962 i worked at the A & P on main street in orange nj, i was making 90 cents an hour i worked in the produce dept. its ashame how the A & P corp fell to pieces. at one time it was as big as walmart today. Bill B West Virginia

  4. Heartbroken! The Waldbaums used by my grandparents, my parents and me since childhood will be gone.

  5. A&P a true relic of the past . They never kept up with the grocery business in this era. Their strategy ofd buying grocery chains didn’t work out either.
Fact is they don’t know how to run a store!!! They should have closed and sold many stores after the first bancruptcy.
So A&P. Food Emporium , Pathmark and Waldbaums will be a memory similar to Bohack.

    • For the last 40 years, I’ve been surrounded by Walbaums, four of them, and one Key Food in Whitestone, Queens. The key food is very good and all the Walbaums are very bad. Rotten meat, frozen foods defrosted and re-frozen and most of all many bad employees. Not all employees are bad, but too many are. Don’t ask a butcher anything. There is also a Pathmark fifteen minutes away. I like the Pathmark, but I afraid of my auto being damaged in their parking lot. Over the years, once a month, I drive out to Commack and shop at the Costco, the Target next door and on the way home we stop at Waldbaums in Hicksville. This Waldbaums is the best of all the Waldbaums. Clean, bright and well stocked. People are pleasant as well. With the store closing shift we are getting two Stop and Shops and a Key Food closer to my home. The A&P Company has been in a free fall for many years. Blame management for what is going on. Julia Waldbaums must be turning in her grave.

      • Yes, that comment about Julia has been popular for years. It started for me when A&P turned the Waldbaums stores in to A&P clones and got rid of the Kosher deli department in most stores. I actually just used it today when talking to an A&P employee in my local store. Turns out he used to be a Waldbaums employee before the store changed over. He said that she and her family used to come to visit the store.

  7. Don’t forget about C&S I bet they take over a lot of the stores not sold, like they did when grand union went under. Look how much money A&P owes them,
I had almost 30 years with them, they closed all the stores by me went to work
for another chain, Good luck to all the employees, you will get jobs with other company’s, most company’s like A&P workers, they know how hard you have to work in their stores.

  8. Problem is the unions have bled the company dry. They refuse to sacrifice one bit. The rest of us are, why not them?

    • The Unions gave many concessions to save the company.Even in bankruptcy the managers are being greedy by stting aside 6 million dollars for them selves.

      • The unions had nothing to do with the demise of the A&P brand. I know a few union workers in the A&P store where i live and they been giving back for at least the last 3 contracts while the managers of the stores still received their raises and bonus. The real reason for the collapse was the greedy bastards who continued to buy the other supermarket brands while taking on the hundreds of millions in debt. The only people who caused this to happen were the bankers and equity firms who bleed the company’s dry for their own greed.

        • The only place where unions (over the years) hurt the company was some of their rules about seniority.

So, for example if an area had 4 stores at one point, then they closed 2 of them, the remaining 2 would wind up with a higher cost for labor as the older (longer tenured) workers would move to those stores, getting rid of newer (cheaper) employees.
So if their costs were higher, they would have to raise the prices to keep making a profit (assuming they couldn’t cut costs elsewhere beyond what other chains did), which in turn causes customers to shop elsewhere for a better deal, which starts a whole spiral until the store becomes unprofitable and when enough of them do, the whole company goes bad.

    • CEO’s took this company and for a ride. They should be in jail! The unions had no say in saving or dismantling of the company and workers are making low wages as it is.

    • This has nothing at all to do with the unions, as a matter of fact, it has all to do with the big shots in the headquarters in Montvale. They gave them all this money before bankruptcy when they were not doing good and they squandered the money. This has nothing at all to do with unions and as a matter of fact, it is the employees that are having to suffer now due to greed from upper management. 🙁

    • My family history of working for A & P goes back to the 1930’s up through the 1960’s. A & P was not very good to their workers. The unions were necessary in order to make any advances in pay and benefits and to guarantee job security. Although I worked in retail and the bakery manufacturing in the late 1950′ and the 1960’s, my dad worked through the 30′ 40’s, 50’s and 60’s in the Somerville, Ma bakery. He got crap for a pension. He worked slave hours and jobs and was never appreciated for his many years of dedication. Their demise was of their own making.

  9. Please let me know updates

  10. Most of the other stores will go dark and then new operators will negotiate directly with the landlord. Why pay A&P money when you get many locations for nothing?

  11. Waldbaums was Key Food once before when it was bought from Dans Supreme…and now a bunch are going back to being Key Food..

wish i knew what is happening to Waldbaums on 10th Avenue in Whitestone, NY

    Thanx

  15. I am currently living in Westhampton. Do you know if the Westhampton Waldbaums be bought by anybody. I also want to know about the one in Stony Brook as well, I am having a house built by the one in Stony Brook

  16. The only rumor I herd is that store with out a buyer have 90days to find a buyer or the will have to close their doors

  17. Any thing new about the stores that haven’t been sold yet

  18. Sad to hear, that A&P is in chapter 11. I noticed my A&P on Mclean Ave in Yonkers, has been bought by Acme. Will that be the name on the store? I don’t see anything listed for the two Pathmark on Central Ave in Yonkers, I shop at one of them from time to time. I think the main problem, with allot of these supermarkets is, they are not selling enough healthy organic products, or gluten free. The fruits, and veggies they are selling in the produce section, are pretty bad at my A&P. I’ve been getting apples, oranges, garlic, and green onions, from the Whole Foods on East Houston in the city. Also, not as expensive as I expected either. Seems the best prices, are on the sodas, and snack foods like potato chips. Half the time, the Pathmark in Yonkers is sold out of the whole wheat muffins, and mini bagels. Hope Acme is better.

  19. Sorry I’m boring you but I have a family member who works there and we are a little worried ok

    • So set a Google Alert for A&P and the store location and if any news gets posted you’ll find out about it. Or sign up on this site to be notified when new articles are posted. I’m sure if something new were announced it would have been mentioned here.

  20. Has anyone heard anything about the pathmark on 60 th street yet has it been sold yet

    • Are you going to post this question every week? There haven’t been any announcements of sales since the first batch. And the bankruptcy court won’t finalize anything until September, so you’ve got a while.

      • Stop being so u sensitive hopefully ur never in the position some of us are an if you are in the position an not worried something is wrong with u

        • You have a valid point, but expecting someone to know new information and not post it until someone asks a question doesn’t make sense. As I told the other person, set a Google Alert for A&P and the location of the store you’re interested in, and if something is announced and an article is written, you should get notified. The bottom line is nothing is going to be final until the bankruptcy court rules on the bids in September, so even the stores that currently think they’re going to be Acme could end up as something else.

  21. If the lease of the property which the store is on is up in the next two years would that affect store which numbers are flat from other potential buyers in the grocery business

  22. When will tier2 take effect

    • It most likely won’t happen all at once, as they sell off individual stores or groups of stores little by little. No other sales have been announced yet, but watch for updates here as they happen.

      • I know that the bankruptcy court has to approve the sales and that other bidders could come in and make a competing offer. Do you know if they would have to bid on the entire package, or if someone could step in and offer more for one of the stores that ACME is buying and take it away from them? I’m thinking they’d have to bid on the whole group or competitors could pick away the best locations and leave ACME with the lesser locations.

        • According to the documentation, either is possible –

          “parties may submit bids for:
          a. all of the stores in a particular stalking horse bid (a ‘Stalking Horse Store Package’); or
          b. one or more of the Debtors’ stores, in any combination, whether or not such stores are included in a Stalking Horse Store Package.”

The stalking horses being ACME, Stop & Shop and Key Food. So the scenario you describe is still possible at this point.

  23. It’s not a complete list my store isn’t on ANY of those lists

  24. I heard that the pathmark on 60th street Brooklyn was bought by an hospital is this true and when will the store close

    • As the site owner said earlier, “Any store that’s not on the closed or sold lists is available for sale, but no buyers have been named yet. So there’s no telling what will become of them just yet – but watch for updates!”

The individual store sales have not been announced yet.

    • please any information on pathmark borough park 60street Brooklyn N.Y would be appreciated if it’s not on the list what can that mean and I too all so herd the rumor of mamaddies hospital prospecting the property please help my email is Jmt2285@aol.com

    • Deborah please any furthe info you may have I would love to hear am a local distributor(pepsicola) I desperately need information regarding the future of that property any thing you can share would be great my email Jmt2285@aol.com

  25. What about Pathmark in Ramsey on RT 17 NJ not on the list?

  26. Interesting that a few CT stores are being sold to Acme… are they really going to send trucks to Acme or is Shaw’s which closed a few years ago under different ownership in CT going to come back? I think Shaw’s still has a lot of brand equity in CT and they can do well with just a few stores. But I remember what was at issue is the transit costs of delivering to CT as trucks were being sent from ME to service CT Shaw’s stores.

    • The stores they took in CT are relatively close to the Westchester County border in NY. It’s worth noting that they didn’t take the store in Danbury, which is much further north.

    • I’d suspect that those CT stores aren’t really all that far from some of the ones in NY that they are also getting, so it shouldn’t be a big issue (although, if there are any that are kind of “separate” they should talk to the A&P folks from the late 90’s – they managed to maintain a couple stores in the Adirondacks that had to be at least a couple hours from any other locations, not to mention 20+ miles from each other).

  27. The Pathmark mentioned in the list is actually just off the Whitestone Expressway. It’s at the first exit. The one in College Point is on 20th avenue.

  28. You would think that with the long long history the name “Waldbaum’s” has in NY, they would have worked out a deal to keep the name. In fact, I would think that the names “Waldbaum” and “Pathmark” are probably worth more than the stores.

    • Does the Waldbaum’s name really have a lot of value with A&P having owned it for almost 30 years (yes, it’s been that long)? Many who remembered WB in its prime are senior citizens (or worse).

  29. The Waldmaum’s store in College Point, NY is not on any of these lists. Can anyone confirm the status of this store?

  30. I don’t see the Great Neck Waldbaums or The New Hyde Park Pathmark.

  31. The Whitestone and College Point Waldbaums are not on this list. Do you know what is happening to those stores?

  32. Thanks CITN. Any word on the Food Emporium Brand?

    Thanks!

    • You’re welcome, Adam! There’s only one Food Emporium on the “to be sold” list so far, and none to be closed yet, so the rest are all in the mushy middle – for sale, in whole or parts. I haven’t heard anything yet about whether any interested buyer might want to buy them all and keep the banner alive.

      • I read a post on an investing board suggesting that Whole Foods could be interested in the Food Emporium locations to jump start their new moderately priced 365 store brand. I wonder if they’d be interested in doing it on such a large scale.

My wife told me that she spoke to someone who works at an A&P that’s on the list of stores going to ACME saying that they had heard it was going to be a Shoprite. I certainly wouldn’t mind it (it is more convenient than my nearest SR), and I guess all purchases are not final until the bankruptcy court approves and someone could outbid ACME (which is why the S&S purchases say that they are not final) but I find it amusing that people would spread rumors like that when the store is on the list of locations that ACME is buying.

    • All remaining Food Emporium locations will be either sold or closed.

  33. Acme is taking almost all of the stores in Westchester and Putnam Counties, NY, even a few smaller ones. Should be interesting to have them instead of A&P.

I noticed the stores in Nanuet, NY and Danbury, CT are not on any list.

    • Those stores must be “Tier II” – it’s entirely possible that ACME or one of the others might scoop those up too, when they officially hit the market. Otherwise, they might end up being sold to other grocery operators, or to Big Lots, TJ Maxx, Goodwill, or whoever else might want a supermarket-sized empty building at a bargain price…

    • They also have a couple that are in Dutchess County (like Pleasant Valley & Hopewell Junction) but are missing the LaGrange location.

It seems like that (and the couple you mention) could wind up being picked up along the way as well.

Also – don’t forget that Acme’s parent company owns Shaw’s (which was in CT until a few years ago and is still in much of New England) and that Acme itself has been in NY in the past (like 1970 or before timeframe).
Would also be interesting if their parent company could buy the A&P name/logos for some sort of use, maybe a special store brand line, as since they merged with Safeway recently they are the most like the “old” A&P, having store chains across the country, from Atlantic to Pacific!
