No, your Albertsons, Vons and Safeway stores that became Haggen earlier this year will not become Albertsons, Vons and Safeway stores again, now that Haggen has gone bankrupt. (Update: Well, they just might – see the latest story here). But other grocers are now staking their claims on three dozen of the 127 stores that Haggen has announced it’s giving up, as it bails on California, Arizona and Nevada and heads back to its Pacific Northwest home with a much smaller store count.
In newly-released bankruptcy court documents, Southern California grocer Gelson’s has been named the stalking horse bidder for 8 closing Haggen stores, and growing warehouse grocer Smart & Final is the stalking horse bidder for 28 stores, most in Southern California, with one in Las Vegas (see the full list below).
Gelson’s $36 million total bid, and Smart & Final’s $56 million offer, will serve as the baseline bids for those stores, ahead of auctions scheduled to be held on November 9th. Their offers will be considered final if no higher bids come in.
Apart from the stalking horse packages, nearly 100 other Haggen locations are available to the highest bidder. 91 stores that Haggen has announced would be closing, will go on the auction block. And a handful of additional stores may play into the mix as well. In court documents, Haggen slipped six of the “core stores” it said it would be keeping, onto a list of “non-core stores” that it plans to make available for sale. All of those are listed below. Haggen tentatively plans to keep them, unless a better offer comes along. So if you’re a Haggen fan in the Northwest and were relieved to find your store would survive the sale process – don’t breathe a sigh of relief just yet.
Meanwhile, if the two stalking horse bids are successful, it would represent a big expansion for the upscale Gelson’s. The 18-store chain would grow by nearly 50% with the acquisitions.
The bids from Smart & Final, meanwhile, come just a week and a half after the discount retailer announced plans to expand by more than 100 stores over the next four years. Acquiring 28 former Haggen locations in one fell swoop would put Smart & Final well on its way toward that goal. With 266 stores in California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Nevada and Idaho – most of the markets where Haggen operates, for now – chances are good that Smart & Final may bid on additional Haggen locations as well.
Smart & Final may be a welcome addition to the neighborhood, for shoppers who were put off by Haggen’s high prices. Gelson’s, in contrast, is even higher-end than Haggen aspired to be, with pricey specialty brands, sushi and imported foods that make it a favorite of celebrities.
Despite their differences, though, both Gelson’s and Smart & Final already have one thing going for them – they’re already familiar to area shoppers. Haggen was an unknown in California, Arizona and Nevada when it bought 146 stores from Safeway and Albertsons earlier this year, and most shoppers never warmed to it. Now, with 127 Haggen signs about to be taken down in their neighborhood – they’ll never have to.

A question to your opening comment, why wouldn’t they be able to?
Is there a clause or a law that prohibits Albertsons from purchasing back these stores or would it be left up to the FTC to approve??
Well, the opening comment was meant to suggest that it’s not realistic to expect the stores to simply change back to the way they used to be. One could certainly try to make a case to the FTC that a community would be underserved if a store goes dark, it would result in too many lost jobs, etc., so maybe it would be better to approve a sale back to Albertsons than to let the store sit empty. It’s probably unlikely that Albertsons would be interested, or the FTC would approve, but nothing’s impossible!

I don’t see our store on Cliff Drive in Santa Barbara listed anywhere…luckily, I think it’s too small for a Smart and Final, but wasn’t picked up by Gelson’s either…does anyone know the fate of our store?
Anything not on these lists to be sold to Smart & Final and Gelson’s is eligible to be auctioned on November 9th, so no telling about the fate of the other stores until then.

Hopefully Smart and Final does not come to the Ventura store. Customers are not warming up to this idea. It’s a non Union store that would put about 75 people out of work. We have a lot of pro Union customers that shop at that location because it is union. It is not good news.
