ALDI doesn’t do manufacturer’s coupons, it doesn’t have mega sales or 10 for $10 deals, and it doesn’t have a loyalty program.

But it does have the lowest everyday prices on groceries, according to a new report released by – ALDI itself.

“Report confirms ALDI offers the lowest prices of any national grocery store,” ALDI declared in announcing the ALDI-commissioned “2025 ALDI Price Leadership Report.”

Now, lest anyone think ALDI put its thumb on the scale to ensure that ALDI came out on top, the report was prepared by an independent consultancy, which compared prices between ALDI stores and its “traditional grocery competitors” in Miami, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Houston. The researchers compiled a basket of 70 common grocery items across multiple categories, and tallied up the costs for brand names at traditional grocers versus store brand equivalents at ALDI.

The biggest dollar savings were seen in New York, where the report determined a shopper buying for a family of four could save $4,338 a year at ALDI. In Houston, where groceries cost about half as much as they do in New York, the dollar savings were also about half as much. But in all of the cities studied, the percentage savings were the same, 36%.

But what if a shopper bought store brands instead of higher-priced name brands at ALDI’s competitors? The report said ALDI wins there, too, with a still-respectable savings percentage of 22%.

As a “bonus,” the report said, “on any given individual item, shoppers can save up to 63% when shopping ALDI private label compared to a brand name equivalent product.”

ALDI says it all adds up to a collective savings of $8.3 billion per year for its American customers.

“Our stores are, quite literally, designed to save you money,” ALDI USA CEO Jason Hart said in a statement. “By operating smaller locations, placing an emphasis on private labels and maintaining our famous quarter cart system, we offer award-winning quality at lower prices than the competition every day, even during economically challenging times.”

According to a survey of ALDI shoppers conducted alongside the pricing study, ALDI said respondents considered it the grocer most associated with the best value, low everyday prices and quality products. 88% said ALDI helps them stay within their budget, and 76% said ALDI brands are just as good as other stores’ name brands.

Of course, ALDI doesn’t have nearly the selection and variety that larger grocery stores do. And many of its fans supplement their ALDI shopping trips with visits to other stores to get what they can’t necessarily find at ALDI.

And there was no mention in the pricing survey of sales and coupons. A savvy shopper who clips coupons and shops the sales could pay much less for name brands at bigger grocery stores than the ALDI report suggests.

Hart acknowledged that “periodic sales and limited time deals” offered by other stores “may have temporarily eased the burden” of inflation. But “shoppers nationwide are still hit with sticker shock in the aisles of traditional grocery stores as they see new cost increases passed down to them,” he said.

The report comes as ALDI is in the midst of carrying out an aggressive expansion strategy. Last year, it announced plans to open 800 new stores by the end of 2028, bringing its total U.S. store count well past 3,000. Some of those will be brand-new stores from the ground up, while dozens of others will be converted Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores that ALDI formally acquired last year.

And as it expands into new areas, ALDI hopes its new report helps to spread the word about what it has to offer. “The results show that when it comes to value, ALDI is the undisputed leader,” Hart said. “We’re setting the new standard for grocery retail by delivering unmatched savings to our shoppers, bringing us one step closer to becoming America’s first stop for groceries.”

An estimated 25% of American households already shop at ALDI. With hundreds of new stores on the way, ALDI won’t rest until it can convince the other 75% to do the same.
