Is your Family Dollar store on the chopping block?
In the last step ahead of earning final approval for its takeover of Family Dollar, Dollar Tree has announced which of the company’s 330 stores it plans on selling (see the complete list below).
The good news is that none of the stores will actually be closing. The bad news is, if you’ve grown accustomed to your local Family Dollar, it’s about to transform into something of an unknown quantity.
As Dollar Tree revealed last month, it will be selling the Family Dollar stores to Sycamore Partners, the owner of various retailers including Aeropostale, Coldwater Creek and Talbots. Sycamore plans to transform the 330 stores in 35 states into its very own dollar store chain, called Dollar Express.
Most of the Family Dollar stores on the list are very close to existing Dollar Tree locations. While the two chains’ assortment and price points are very different, the Federal Trade Commission said allowing the chains to combine as is, would lessen competition. “This settlement will ensure that consumers will continue to benefit from competition among their local dollar stores,” Debbie Feinstein, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Competition, said in a statement.
Even after the switchover, Family Dollar will still have 7,800 stores in nearly every state in the country. That number could dwindle further, though, as Dollar Tree has said it plans to rebrand at least a handful of Family Dollar stores as Dollar Trees, as an experiment. Dollar Tree itself currently has some 5,000 locations, so it would have to rebanner at least 1,400 Family Dollar stores in order for the parent company to gain store-count parity with its new acquisition.
However it all plays out, the store sales to Sycamore cap a tumultuous battle for Family Dollar that began last year. Soon after Dollar Tree announced its intention to acquire Family Dollar, rival Dollar General swooped in with its own offer. After much back and forth, and some fighting words from both sides, Dollar Tree prevailed. Retail analysts had estimated that Dollar General would have had to close or sell some 4,000 stores in order for the deal to go through, and Dollar General had strongly hinted that it would eventually convert the remaining Family Dollar locations to Dollar Generals.
That won’t happen now, as all three major dollar store chains will continue to operate under their current names. And all three plan to continue opening new stores at a rapid pace. The only difference is, there will be a smaller, upstart new competitor in the mix. Sycamore hasn’t said much about what Family Dollar shoppers can expect after their stores are converted to Dollar Express. Will selection, prices, policies, store layouts and employees remain the same? We don’t know just yet.
But one thing’s for sure – if you’re partial to dollar store shopping, you’ll still have plenty of options.

In a few cases, noted below, a determination will be made later as to which of two stores in four cities will be sold.

Family Dollar was one of the worst stores I had the displeasure to visit. They were never well stocked, sloppy, dirty, rude employees, and the items were priced too high. The stores were worst than a Goodwill and looked like several storms came and went without being cleaned up. Went in once and did not return.
Family Dollar in Doerun, GA, is closing, and it is not on your list. Need to update your list…employees don’t know their fate…20% off the lowest priced item when you get to register to pay. Why? Thought they needed the money they so badly been crying about. Cut Wall Street greed and that funny math and live like regular human beings on planet Earth. America steady pricing itself out of house and home…maybe a planet to live on.
The one’s in Idaho suck they are to high price .Put in a dollar store it will do a lot better. Or waste your money on stores that don’t get customers back they go somewhere else to shop.
There’s also stores closing that aren’t on that list. We have several in our city that’s closing.

I really hate hearing that so many Family Dollar Stores are closing. I enjoy shopping at them better than the Dollar General. Family Dollar has more home decor than the Dollar General. Family Dollar prices are better. I have had a better all experience shopping in the Family Dollar. Hurricane Michael took a lot of ours away. Only a couple survived.

Family Dollar and Dollar General ate supposed to be cheap, but I’ve seen many items priced higher than Walmart! Dollar Tree doesn’t carry very useful, everyday items such as coffee filters, pet food and toys, bread, milk, eggs, bath soap, cigarettes, phone chargers, quality TP &paper towels, etc. Dollar Tree carries cheap, foreign made crap! Mostly small things for holidays, etc. USA doesn’t need or want cheap foreign made crap that usually isn’t even worth a $1.00

why all these mergers? And then shutting down stores? Keep the competition! Each had its own selling point. Personally I want to see a Dollar store with all items made in the USA.NO food imported from China. We don’t need food items imported from anywhere-period. Merging does not help the consumer at all- it never did. Banks are especially prone to this. And also Dept. stores and supermarkets. Keep the competition.

I love Family Dollar! I have been shopping there for years. I go there faithfully for cleaning supplies. Dollar tree is cheap, it does not have good quality stuff, it is a low budget store. I hate going there, keep all the Family Dollars stores open in Baltimore! I hate going to Walmart and Target they are so expensive and congested.
I use family dollar in place of Walmart. I buy diapers and tide and dog food from family dollar. These items are not at dollar tree!
Please DO NOT CLOSE the Buena Vista Rd Family Dollar! That is like the neighborhood store. I love shopping there and the associates are so kind and welcoming! I shop there everyday, when I found out I was really hurt and disappointed. I wish it was a petition for all of the faithful customers to sign.
I hate that they changed the Family Dollar in Port Clinton, Ohio into a Dollar Tree. They sell nothing but junk! I guess what do you expect for a dollar? Family Dollar had such good selection and some name brand foods among other things that weren’t cheap.The only thing I ever purchased at a Dollar Tree is a bottle or two of dish soap. I will not be spending my money in that junkhouse!
Okay I just got something from Family Dollar store and after a week it stop working …smh so I ask the lady there she told me you that video can’t bring it back cause it’s not a family Dollar store any more. SO I said it say on the family Dollar on the front of the store and it says it on receipt. We are now dollar express. Yes that’s what your telling me .by word of mouth So you telling me I can’t bring things back,to this store cause the working are saying it .i think that’s wrong ! I think in till you change the name on the building and the receipt .you should allow to make returns. So tell me what I should do with a fan that don’t work after a week having it !!!

Hello, I run a dollar general in Nebraska. I’m sorry you had a bad experience in one of our stores. I have an extensive background in retail and know how important customer service is and apply that daily to ALL of.my customers. Unfortunately we do have bad store managers and bad district managers. I wish you could shop at my DG. I think you would love it!

Family Dollar is more expensive for their name brand items, dollar tree here does not have a freezer section like others, would be nice if they did. 3 family dollars within 25 miles here. 2 are within 5 minutes apart. That is dumb. yet still staying open. Get something different in one of them.

I love the Family Dollar store, we don’t need another dollar tree. They don’t have what family dollar has to sell. I am really close to the workers at the family dollar near my home. Oh you are SO right Debie F.! I think it is a big mistake too! Time will tell with this. I can get alot of the same things for a dollar at the Dollar General.Thank God they still have a Family Dollar in a town about 10 miles from me. I ve got a doctor in that town so I will be stopping there every time.
Dollar Tree is not a good dollar store they don’t sell gallons of milk, loaves of bread among othr things. The 99¢ only store sells those products. Dollar Tree needs to go out of business. ASAP.
I agree, who wants some more junk stores. They are already at every other corner. They sell low quality items. At least with family dollar they have name brand items. I will never spend a dollar there.
no, that’s not entirely true…I have seen loaves of bread at my Dollar Tree in Oregon, plus they have a good assortment of frozen foods. I like my Dollar Tree and I do not want them to go out of business ever!

Dollar Tree, Dollar General, Dollar Express, Family Dollar. They’re all the same in my mind, though one of them, I think, is more like a supermarket than a dollar store. No idea which one. Seems like they’d do better with name differentiation.
